Publication of the open access book INTERLOCAL ADAPTATIONS TO CLIMATE CHANGE IN EAST AND SOUTHEAST ASIA

Global and Local Environment Co-creation Institute (GLEC) at Ibaraki University has been promoting the formation of a network of research bases for climate change adaptation science in East and Southeast Asia. As a result, an open access book was published by Springer in 2022. The book, which can be viewed online for free and was authored by 35 researchers from six countries (Japan, Vietnam, Indonesia, Philippines, China, and Thailand), consists of 10 chapters and nine columns.
The effects of climate change are already manifesting themselves in numerous regions around the world, and we need to adapt to both current and future risks concurrently. From the perspective of adaptation, there are two general approaches: science-driven and community-driven. In other words, the former is a method for formulating and implementing adaptation measures based on monitoring, climate change forecasting, downscaling, conducting impact and vulnerability assessments, and verifying policy effects. On the other hand, there are also community-based measures in which the community plays a central role in the planning and implementation of adaptation measures focused on mitigating against changes in weather and climate that adversely affect agriculture and fishing activities, and the impact of disasters. The latter begins with understanding the needs of residents and communities as they relate to climate change in the surrounding areas, and aims to improve the adaptability and resilience (i.e., the recuperative strength or resilience to external disturbances) of the entire community through a variety of practices. These two approaches are complementary and need to be considered organically and in combination in order to promote adaptation effectively.
This book introduces "interlocal" climate change adaptations of six countries in East and Southeast Asia in the areas such as agriculture, disaster prevention, and resource management. Here, we discuss the characteristics, commonalities, and lessons of climate change adaptation in each region using numerous practical examples.
