First workshop
- Launch of SARNCCAS -

The first memorable SARNCCAS workshop was held on December 22 in 2018 at the Vietnam Japan University in Hanoi. A total of 53 researchers and students in a variety of fields attended the workshop from Japan, Vietnam, Thailand, and the Philippines. In the morning session, 20 research and activity reports on climate change adaptation in different countries and regions were presented in a poster session. In the afternoon, the participants were divided into three task groups, “Natural Disasters”, “Adaptation and Mitigation” and “Environment” and tasked with discussing the challenges posed by climate change and how to apply solutions interlocally. In addition, intensive discussions were held in a round-table format. The day before the workshop, an excursion to Xuan Thuy National Park along the coast of Nam Dinh Province was organized for the participants. It is hoped that this first workshop will be the start of “Southeast Asia Research-based Network on Climate Change Adaptation Science”, which will lead to new joint research ventures, collaborative projects, and coauthored papers.

The Second Workshop
- Natural Resources, Human Resources, and Risk Management in the Context of Climate Change-

The second SANCCAS workshop was held on January 10 2020 at the University of Natural Resources and Environment, Hanoi, approximately one year after the first workshop. The workshop consisted of 12 oral lectures and approximately 30 poster presentations, and participants engaged in lively discussions focused on natural and human resources, and risk management in response to climate change. Participants went on an excursion to the coastal area of Tien Lang District, Hai Phong Province, about 100 km southwest of Hanoi, where they visited mangrove forests and fishing villages to learn about the impacts of climate change and adaptation measures.

The Third Workshop
“Sharing Interlocal Adaptation Lessons: Climate Change Adaptations and development in East and Southeast Asia”

The third workshop on the formation of a research hub was held on November 17, 2020. The event was co-organized by the GLEC of Ibaraki University, Vietnam Japan University (VJU), and the Vietnam Institute of Economics (VIE). The third workshop was conducted online due to restrictions imposed by COVID-19. The VJU students and lecturers streamed the area affected by typhoons due to climate change (Can Nam Province). Research results were presented from Japan, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, and other countries, as well as from students from VJU, Ibaraki University, and the University of Tsukuba. Although this was the first online workshop, more than 100 participants gathered for the event.

The Fourth Workshop
“Sharing Interlocal Adaptation Lessons: Climate Change Adaptations and development in East and Southeast Asia”

The fourth workshop was held on September 16 and 17, 2021, and was co-hosted by the Japan International Research Center for Agricultural Sciences, Vietnam Japan University (VJU) and Vietnam Institute of Economics (VIE). To start the online event, the co-hosts introduced their research institutes, and used SpatialChat and Miro to present their research and exchange opinions. There was also a presentation by a second-year student from Ibaraki University Junior High School who presented research on efforts to deal with climate change and other serious environmental problems. The presentation was very innovative and included the use of video captured using a drone. There was also a keynote speech by Prof. Morishita, a visiting professor at Ibaraki University, who served as the Vice-Minister for Global Environmental Affairs at the Ministry of the Environment. The workshop was a great success and was attended by more than 280 participants. A commemorative symposium for the publication of a book on climate change adaptation was held after the workshop.
